INDIANA, PA – The No. 13 Crimson Hawks improve to 16-1, 12-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) after earning a 79-60 victory over the Pitt-Johnstown Lady Cats, Tuesday at the Kovalchick Complex.
Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) and
Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) led IUP with 24 points each.
In addition to her 24 points, Stamp earned her sixth double-double of the season with 14 rebounds. Stoner finished the night just shy of a double-double, with nine boards.
Like many of their other games this season, the Crimson Hawks led the Lady Cats through the entire 40 minutes.
Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center) hit a layup in the first minute of the game to kick off IUP's offensive drive. The Crimson Hawks scored eight points, before Pitt-Johnstown finally responded with a layup.
By the end of the half, IUP was leading 33-18, but the Lady Cats came back for the second half strong. In just four minutes, Pitt-Johnstown made the score 39-33. Stoner, Stamp and
Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana), however, kicked it into high gear and pushed IUP to another big win.
As a team, the Crimson Hawks completed 31-of-70 shots from the field for a 44.3 field goal percentage. Stapleton finished the night with 13 points, six rebounds and three assists, marking her eighth double-digit game of the season.
Although they were successful in the paint, IUP couldn't connect behind the arc. The team finished just 2-of-10 for a three-point percentage of 20.0. Stapleton and
Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) were the only Crimson Hawks to sink a three.
Four Crimson Hawks saw action off the bench for IUP including
Zhane Brooks (Erie, Pa. /Villa Maria) who finished the game with four points and five rebounds.
Defensively, IUP grabbed 39 boards, and recorded four blocks and three steals.
The Crimson Hawks return to action Saturday, January 24, when they travel to Clarion. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
