CLARION, PA - Senior forward
Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) earned her 1,000th career point and led the Crimson Hawks to an 85-56 victory over the Golden Eagles, Saturday in Clarion.
Going into the game, the forward had tallied 981 points, needing just 19 more to reach the career mark. Stoner hit the milestone with a layup just 65 seconds into the second half. She now joins fellow senior,
Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep), in the 1,000 point club. Stamp reached her mark earlier this season against Ohio Valley.
Stoner finished the night with her third double-double and second 20-point game of the season. Shooting 8-of-13 from the field and 5-of-6 from the foul line, she finished with 21 points and 12 boards. In addition, she added one steal, block and assist.
Stamp started the game for the Crimson Hawks with a free throw, taking off with a 1-0 lead for IUP. Just like Wednesday's game against Pitt-Johnstown, IUP held onto that lead throughout the entire 40 minute game.
By the half, IUP already had a large 47-23 lead over the Golden Eagles. All 13 Crimson Hawks saw action on the court, and put forth a team effort to reach their 17th win of the season.
This win over Clarion improved IUP's overall record to 17-1, 13-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). After Wednesday, the Crimson Hawks moved into the first spot in the PSAC Western Division, passing by California (Pa.) who fell to Gannon Thursday.
In addition to Stoner, Stamp also had a solid game, finishing with 19 points, nine rebounds and two steals.
Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) scored double-figures for the seventh time this season tonight with 12 points, not to mention her five assists.
Freshman
Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) spent 20 minutes on the court and put up four points and six boards.
Monica Burns (New Stanton, Pa. /Hempfield ) finished 2-of-4 from both the field and behind the arc for six total points. Another notable player is
Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) who tallied eight points, four rebounds and three assists.
As a team, IUP shot for 49.2% from the field after sinking 32-of-65 shots. From three-point range, IUP 35%, and 60.9% from the foul line. The Crimson Hawks finished the night with 52 rebounds, compared to the Golden Eagles' 26.
IUP returns to the court next Saturday when they host Seton Hill at the Kovalchick Complex. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
