No. 5 Women's Basketball Upset by Rival California

INDIANA, PA – The No. 5 Crimson Hawks finished the night with fewer points than they have posted all season in Wednesday's 76-45 loss to the California Vulcans at the Kovalchick Complex.  In addition, the game marked the most points IUP has allowed their opponents to score this season.

This was the Crimson Hawks' second loss of the season, with each coming from the Vulcans.  Similar to the first time the two teams played each other, IUP committed a high number of turnovers.  In their first matchup in early January, the Crimson Hawks finished the night with 26 turnovers.  Wednesday, IUP surpassed that and committed a season-high 28.

The beginning of the game proved to be a battle for each team.  At the 16 minute mark, the score was just 8-4 with the Vulcans in the lead.  The Crimson Hawks closed the scoring gap to just two points with 13 minutes remaining in the half, but quickly let the score get away from them.

California's largest lead of the first half was 33-12, and the Vulcans went into the locker room leading 33-16.  This was just the second time this season that the Crimson Hawks were not the halftime leaders.

The second half went by just like the first, with California leading by at least 10 points throughout the entire 20 minutes.

Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center) finished the night with a team-high 11 points, in addition to her three steals.  Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) added eight points, eight rebounds and one block.  Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) finished with double-digit boards, 11, but came short of another double-double with just seven points.

Seeing action off the bench for IUP, Zhane Brooks (Erie, Pa. /Villa Maria) tallied eight points and two blocks in her 22 minutes on the court.

Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) tied her season-high with nine rebounds, and added six assists.

As a team, the Crimson Hawks shot just 18-of-51 from the field, and 4-of-15 from behind the arc.  From the foul line, IUP shot 50%, sinking 5-of-10.

This loss dropped the Crimson Hawks' overall record to 18-2, 14-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).  Prior to tonight, IUP held the top seed in the PSAC Western Division, holding off California and Gannon who were tied in second place.

The Crimson Hawks will return to action Saturday when they travel to Gannon.  Tipoff against the Golden Knights is set for 5:00 p.m.
