WEST CHESTER, PA - An excellent afternoon of shooting, led by double-digit performances from five Crimson Hawks helped guide 20th-ranked IUP to a 84-65 victory over regional-rival West Chester in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover play Sunday afternoon.
The Crimson Hawks shot 52.5 percent from the floor, including 42.9 percent from three-ball range and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe. The Crimson Hawks' defense held West Chester to just a 35.6 field goal percentage, allowing the Golden Rams to convert on only 7-of-21 three pointers.
Shawn Dyer (Marion, Ohio/Marion Harding) led the way for the nationally-ranked Crimson Hawks, who are currently riding a five-game win-streak. The transfer recorded 21 points on the afternoon, going 57.1 percent from the field and 5-of-9 from behind the arc. He also added nine points, three assists and one steal in the winning effort.
The game got off to a slow start, with neither team able to convert on a basket until
Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter) sunk one from behind the arc after more than two minutes of play, giving IUP the early 3-0 lead.
The Crimson Hawks held on to the advantage until halfway through the first half when West Chester took its first lead of the afternoon following a three-ball from Mike Wilson. A jumper from Dyer with just over nine minutes remaining in the half put the game back in IUP's favor, but the Golden Rams responded less than two minutes later with a three-ball to reclaim the lead.
Back-to-back three pointers from
Stefan Osborne (Victoria, Australia/St. Patrick's College) and
Brandon Norfleet (Virginia Beach, Va. /Landstown) swung the momentum in favor of the Crimson Hawks and sent them on a 17-4 run to close out the half. Shooting 46.7 percent in the first half, the Crimson Hawks headed into the break with the 36-25 advantage.
IUP picked up right where it left off in the second half, opening the final 20 minutes of play with a 12-4 run to go up by 19 with just over 16 minutes remaining.
A three pointer from Cory Blake with under eight minutes to play would pull the Golden Rams within 12, but the IUP defense remained strong, never allowing its cross-state rival within single digits of the lead.
As time ticked off the clock, the Crimson Hawks kept the pressure on, getting up by as many as 21 points with under a minute to go and holding on for the 84-65 win.
In addition to Dyer, Chance, Norfleet,
