U92radio.comTHE GAMEWednesday, the No. 16 undefeated Crimson Hawks will host the Cheyney Wolves in the team's first home matchup of 2015. Cheyney, 2-11, 2-6 PSAC, is currently ranked 8th in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East. The Wolves two victories of the season came from PSAC opponents Mansfield (72-69) and Clarion (60-53). In the all-time series, the Crimson Hawks hold a 14-2 lead over Cheyney. These two teams last met Dec. 1 during the 2012-13 season where IUP saw an 81-39 win over the Wolves.
LAST TIME OUTIUP last took the court Saturday and Sunday when they played East Stroudsburg and No. 20 West Chester in PSAC Crossover action on the road. The weekend kicked off with an 84-59 IUP win over the Warriors. Sr. G
Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) led the offensive charge for the Crimson Hawks and posted 27 points. Sunday, Stamp put up 25 points to help IUP reach a 76-54 victory against No. 20 West Chester.
WHAT'S NEXTSo far, this season has been a battle for the top of the PSAC West between the Crimson Hawks and California (Pa.). Saturday, Jan. 10, IUP will travel into Vulcan territory to take on California in a battle of the PSAC West. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
FAST STARTThis season's 12-0 start marks the best beginning record since 1999-2000 when IUP started off 16-0 before they saw their first loss from Edinboro, 78-66. This team finished the season 24-5, and competed in the PSAC tournament where they were knocked out by Millersville, 76-57. IUP later advanced to the NCAA East Regional Semifinals where, again, Millersville got the best of them, 75-73. More recently, the Crimson Hawks began 11-0 in 2011-12 before being defeated 58-55 by Millersville.
NATIONAL ATTENTIONWith the help of their 12-0 start, the Crimson Hawks have received placements in the Division II Media Poll sponsored by D2SIDA and the USA TODAY Sports Division II Top 25 Poll. Previously in the USA TODAY coaches poll, IUP was tied at No. 25 with Harding University (Ark). In the most updated poll - released Tuesday - IUP came out at No. 16. The Crimson Hawks first made their appearance on the D2SIDA Media Poll at 20th. Last week, with the help of their win over Bloomsburg, they moved to 11th. This week, however, the Crimson Hawks moved up even further, and now sit at No. 9.
OVERCOMING RANKED OPPONENTSIn IUP's 10 games, they have earned victories over three teams who were at-the-time nationally ranked. December 6th, the Crimson Hawks defeated No. 25 Gannon 74-51. This PSAC win came for IUP before they were ranked in either poll. December 20th, the Crimson Hawks earned their second win over a ranked team when they overcame the No. 17 Huskies 67-53. IUP's most recent victory, 76-54, came over No. 20 West Chester in Golden Rams territory.
NO. 1 RANKINGSLast weekends victories over East Stroudsburg and West Chester, paired with a Bloomsburg win over California (Pa.), moved IUP into the top of the PSAC West. The Crimson Hawks are currently the only undefeated team in the conference. In the Division II Atlantic Region Media Poll sponsored by D2SIDA, IUP is ranked No. 1 after being tied for first with California last week. The Vulcans have now moved down to No. 2, where they are tied with Bloomsburg.
THE LEADERIUP leans on Stamp, the best all-around player for the Crimson Hawks. She tops the team with 20.0 PPG, and owns a 48.9 FG% after connecting on 90-of-184 shots from the field. Also 1st on the team with a 42.6 3FG%, she leads with 7.5 RPG and 8 total blocks.
This senior has posted three double-doubles this season, and has led the team in points nine times. This week, she was selected as the PSAC Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week for the third time this season.
STEALING THE SHOWAs a team, the Crimson Hawks average 8.17 SPG, earning them the 10th spot in the PSAC and 125th place in the NCAA. Sr. G
Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center) leads IUP in steals with 3.1 per-game. This statistic places her at the top of the conference, and ranks her 17th in the NCAA. Fairman has stolen 37 total balls this season, 222 in her four-year career with IUP.
MATHE WITH THE ASSISTPassing 19.67 APG have earned the Crimson Hawks a top spot in the conference, and a 2nd place ranking in the NCAA. IUP also sits at the top of the PSAC for their 1.31 assist/turnover ratio. Sr. G
Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) holds high placements herself, with 4.9 APG - 2nd in the PSAC, 44th in the NCAA - and an assist/turnover ratio of 3.3 - 1st in the PSAC, 10th in the NCAA.
FROM THE FOUL LINETwo Crimson Hawks hold the top two placements in the IUP record books for their FT%. Fairman is first with 82.8% from the foul line, followed by Sr. F
Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) who has shot 82.2% in her career. Currently, IUP has sunk 175-of-249 shots from the foul line this season for a FT% of 70.3.
SCOUTING CHEYNEYThe 2-11 Cheyney Wolves are led offensively by Sr. G Kyra Hines-Allen (14.0 PPG, 8.8 RPG) and Sr. G Kia Whitley-Duncan (7.8 PPG). With an team average of 57.1 PPG, the Wolves have shot 36.3% from the field. On the defensive side of the ball, six Cheyney players have tallied double-figure steals so far this season including Fr. G TaKayla Ellis (11), Hines-Allen (12), Jr. G Lila Jones (13), So. G Amber Genwright (13), Jr. G Aerie DeJesus (15) and Sr. F Destiny McFarlane (16).
