INDIANA, Pa. – Freshman
Jenny Vietmeier (South Park, Pa./South Park) scored two goals, including the extra time game-winner, leading the IUP women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Seton Hill on Wednesday at South Campus Field.
Vietmeier, an attacking player who came on as a 40th minute substitute and celebrates her birthday Thursday, knocked home the game's first goal fewer than four minutes later when a corner kick deflection found her foot before burying it in the back of the Seton Hill goal for her second of the season.
In the 98th minute, Vietmeier gave IUP its second-consecutive extra time victory after she beat a defender and kicked in the game-winner. Vietmeier now has three goals on the season for the Crimson Hawks.
After halftime down 1-0, Seton Hill answered IUP back with a goal in the 56th minute, which would ultimately be the last score of regulation, as both teams fought for position and had trouble converting chances. The back-and-forth game featured 24 total fouls, three yellow cards and a combined 10 offsides violations.
A stout defense kept the Griffins at bay, as IUP goalkeeper
Jessica Printz (Fairfax, Va./WT Woodson) made just one save in the match.
With the win, IUP moves to 8-5-2 overall and 7-4-2 in the PSAC, while Seton Hill drops to 6-8-1 overall and 4-8-1 in the conference. With the top eight teams advancing to the playoffs, IUP is eighth place and one point ahead of Bloomsburg.
The Crimson Hawks take the field again Saturday, as the team travels to Bloomsburg in a key PSAC matchup. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
