Wareham, Stapleton Lead IUP with Runaway win over East Stroudsburg

INDIANA, Pa. - Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic) was nearly perfect and the Crimson Hawks turned a first-half run into a comfortable lead in an 88-66 win over East Stroudsburg Saturday at Memorial Field House.

The Crimson Hawks, following an earlier win this week against Mercyhurst, moves to 3-0 on the season. East Stroudsburg remains winless at 0-3.

The senior point guard, along with redshirt senior Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana), tied for game-high honors, as each player scored 16 points. Wareham scored the game's opening points on a 3-pointer just 10 seconds into action, and followed that up with another three, as she and Zhane Brooks (Erie, Pa. /Villa Maria) accounted for all of IUP's points at the first media timeout.

Wareham finished the day 6-for-7 from the field, including a perfect 4-for-4 effort on 3-pointers, while also adding six assists. Stapleton scored 12 of her 16 points in the second half.

IUP traded baskets with the Warriors in the first quarter before turning an 8-8 tie into a 43-24 lead, capped by a driving layup by Wareham to beat the halftime buzzer.

The Crimson Hawks saw their lead jump to 26 with three minutes left in the third quarter, courtesy of some Brooks' free throws and a layup. Alexis Aiken (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Allegheny)'s only points of the game gave IUP its biggest lead.

IUP shot 46.5 percent in the game on 33-for-71 shooting, including a 9-of-25 effort on 3-pointers, as the Crimson Hawks had four players score in double figures, with freshman reserve Kendall Hunter (Burke, Va. /Paul VI Catholic) adding 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench.

Sophomore guard Lauren Wolosik (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Catholic) scored eight points and handed out a game-high eight assists to go along with three rebounds and three steals. The Crimson Hawks had 12 steals on the day.

IUP returns to action Sunday in a matchup against West Chester. Tipoff at Kovalchick Compelx is set for 1 p.m.
