High-Scoring Second Half Not Enough for Seventh-Ranked Men’s Hoops in Loss to West Chester

INDIANA, Pa. – The Crimson Hawks scored 48 second half points, including 11 from sophomore guard Anthony Glover (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit), but the seventh-ranked IUP men's basketball team fell to a high-scoring West Chester team by a score of 86-76 on Sunday afternoon at the Kovalchick Complex.

The 48 points for the Crimson Hawks in the final 20 minutes were 20 more than what they scored in the first half as they shot 50 percent from the field and went 5-of-9 from three-point range. IUP drops its record to 2-3 overall on the year and 1-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). West Chester is 4-0 and 3-0 in the PSAC.

Glover finished with a team-high 16 points, going 6-of-11 from the field, including 4-of-7 from three-point range. The point total was a season-high.

West Chester jumped out to an early 14-2 lead with the help of four three-pointers. Two of the treys came from guard Malik Jackson, who finished with a game-high 34 points.

The Crimson Hawks chipped away at West Chester's lead, getting it down to five at 33-28 on a fall-away jumper by senior guard Brandon Norfleet (Virginia Beach, Va. /Landstown) as time expired in the first half.

IUP cut its deficit to one at 33-32 early in the second half on a bucket by junior guard Brandon Spain (Baltimore, Md./Glen Burnie), but the Golden Rams went back up on top 48-41 just minutes later. Spain and Glover took over, trading baskets as the Crimson Hawks went on a 9-2 run to take a 52-50 lead with 10:31 to play.

The Crimson Hawks led 58-57 with eight minutes left to play, but West Chester pounced, going on a 14-2 run over the next four minutes to jump on top 71-60. IUP was able to get back to within six at 75-69 on a layup by freshman forward Jacobo Diaz (Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain/CBA Gran Canaria), but the Golden Rams salted away to game to earn the 10-point win.

IUP outshot West Chester 47.5 percent to 46.6 percent, and held the rebounding edge 36-to-33, but turned the ball over 18 times on the afternoon.

Including Glover, five players reached double-figures in scoring for the Crimson Hawks. Diaz had 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting in 15 minutes, adding seven rebounds and two steals. Norfleet scored 12 points and dished out five assists, while Spain and senior forward Daddy Ugbede (Gardena, Calif./Serra) both scored 11 off the bench.

The Crimson Hawks will host the Indiana Regional Medical Center (IRMC) Classic this weekend, playing the University of the Sciences on Friday night and American International on Saturday. Both games tipoff at 7:30 p.m. at the Kovalchick Complex.
