INDIANA, Pa. – Redshirt freshman guard
Courteney Storm (Hollidaysburg, Pa. /Hollidaysburg) scored a season-high 17 points, as a total of nine Crimson Hawks were in the scoring column as the IUP women's basketball team defeated Saint Augustine's 82-34 on Saturday afternoon at the Kovalchick Complex.
Storm went 7-of-18 from the field, including 3-of-7 from three-point range, grabbed six rebounds and had three steals in 25 minutes off the bench. All of her numbers were season-highs as she saw extended playing time for the first time in her career.
The Crimson Hawks improve to 4-2 overall on the year with the victory while Saint Augustine's falls to 1-5. The game was one of two on Saturday afternoon as the Crimson Hawks opened the weekend with its IUP-Lodestar Classic. Edinboro defeated Johnson C. Smith in the day's earlier game.
The 34 points allowed by the Crimson Hawks is tied for the 11th fewest in IUP single game history. Saint Augustine's managed just 10 points in the first half, which is tied for the fifth fewest allowed in a half in IUP history.
All 10 available IUP players saw action as the Crimson Hawks shot 44.1 percent (30-of-68) from the floor and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the foul line. IUP forced Saint Augustine's into 25 turnovers on the afternoon and outrebounded the Falcons 44-to-25.
Senior forward Zhané Brooks just missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds in 22 minutes, going 7-of-9 from the foul line. Senior guard
Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) had nine points and four assists and senior forward
Alexis Aiken (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Allegheny) grabbed six boards in 21 minutes.
Sophomore guard
Halle Denman (Beaver Falls, Pa. /Blackhawk) contributed seven points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals in 22 minutes off the bench. Freshman guard
Carolyn Appleby (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Central Catholic) had nine points and three assists as a reserve, while freshmen forwards
Kendall Hunter (Burke, Va. /Paul VI Catholic) and
Brittany Robinson (Harrisburg, Pa. /Central Dauphin East) both had eight points.
The Crimson Hawks led 17-2 after the opening quarter and 37-10 at halftime. IUP scored 20 in the third and 25 in the fourth, widening its win to 46 points.
IUP will face Johnson C. Smith (3-2) on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
