Strong First Half Helps Women’s Basketball Score 21-point win on Sunday

INDIANA, Pa. – Senior guards Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) and Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic) combined for 33 points and seven three-pointers to help the IUP women's basketball team to a 64-43 victory over visiting Johnson C. Smith on Sunday afternoon at the Kovalchick Complex.
 
Stapleton scored 17 points and went 3-of-8 from three-point range while Wareham finished with 16 points, connecting on 4-of-8 from beyond the arc as the Crimson Hawks improved to 5-2 on the season. Johnson C. Smith falls to 3-3 overall.
 
IUP scored 22 points in the opening quarter and led the Golden Bulls 36-24 at halftime. The Crimson Hawks never trailed in the game, opening play with a fast 12-2 run in the first 2:16 of action. Johnson C. Smith did narrow its gap to three at 14-11 midway through the quarter, but IUP went on top by double-digits in the second before going into the break with that 12-point lead.
 
The Crimson Hawks then held JCS to just six points in the third quarter and scored 17 points in the fourth to seal the victory.
 
IUP forced the Golden Bulls into 18 turnovers on the afternoon and held them to a 29.8 field goal percentage (17-of-57). The Crimson Hawks also held a 41-39 rebounding advantage.
 
Freshman forward Brittany Robinson (Harrisburg, Pa. /Central Dauphin East) helped IUP outrebound the Golden Bulls, grabbing a season-high 12, including five on the offensive end. She added four points, four steals, dished out two assists and had a block in 27 minutes off the bench.
 
Sophomore guard Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) scored eight points while adding seven boards and four assists. Wareham also had a career-high five steals.
 
The Crimson Hawks look ahead to three conference road games this week, heading to Gannon on Tuesday before traveling east to face Shippensburg on Kutztown this weekend.
