ERIE, Pa. – Four Crimson Hawks scored in double-figures but it wasn't enough as IUP fell to Gannon 81-66 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) women's basketball action on Tuesday night at the Hammermill Center.
Senior forward Zhané Brooks scored a team-high 18 points for the Crimson Hawks, who fell to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC. Brooks went 7-of-13 from the field and grabbed four rebounds in 27 minutes of action.
IUP connected on 49.0 percent (25-of-51) of its field goal attempts, including 7-of-18 from three-point range, but Gannon outrebounded the Crimson Hawks 39-to-21 and received 31 points from guard Morgan Neighbors. The Golden Knights improved to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the PSAC.
It was a high-scoring opening quarter that ended tied at 18-18 after the Crimson Hawks went on a 10-5 run over the last 4:05. Gannon then took a double-digit lead with the help of an 11-0 run to end the second quarter, going into halftime with a 36-25 lead.
A 15-9 IUP run to start the third closed the Crimson Hawks' deficit to five at 45-40, but Gannon responded with a 9-1 run and scored 11 of the game's final 13 points to close out the 15-point victory.
In addition to Brooks' 18 points, senior guard
Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) scored 16 points, senior guard
Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic) finished with 12 points and sophomore guard
Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) added 10.
Stapleton went 5-of-11 from the field, including 4-of-8 from three-point range, and dished out four assists. She also went 2-of-2 from the line, stretching her streak of consecutive made free throws to open the season to 14.
Wareham connected on 5-of-10 shots and tallied a career-high seven assists.
The Crimson Hawks hit the road for a pair of PSAC East games this weekend, playing at Shippensburg on Friday night and Kutztown on Saturday afternoon.
