Stoner Finishes with Double-Double in 91-81 Victory over Edinboro

EDINBORO, PA - Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) finished the day with a season-high 24 points and 10 rebounds, earning her fifth double-double of the season in No. 13 IUP's 91-81 victory over the Fighting Scots in Edinboro Saturday.  In addition to Stoner's high scoring, Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) also broke 20 points, with seven rebounds and seven assists.

As the team's foul-shooting leader, Stoner ended the game 2-of-2 from the foul line, and 11-of-17 from the field.  A bulk of Mathe's points came from her four three-pointers, in addition to four foul shots.

The game proved to be an exciting matchup between two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division teams, who each clinched PSAC tournament berths just last week.  When the Fighting Scots faced the Crimson Hawks earlier this season, they were defeated 86-60 on IUP's home court.

For the first six minutes of play, the lead went back and forth between Edinboro and IUP.  The momentum switch was felt with 14:41 on the clock when Mathe sunk her first three-pointer of the game.  The rest of the first half seemed to play into the Crimson Hawks' hand with Stoner posting 10 points, Mathe with nine and Zhane Brooks (Erie, Pa. /Villa Maria) adding eight.

By halftime, IUP was holding onto a 41-36 lead over the Fighting Scots.  In the first 20 minutes, the Crimson Hawks out-shot Edinboro 50% to 44.8% from the field, and 71.4% to 55.6% from behind the arc.

The Fighting Scots went into the second half fighting hard for a victory.  By the end of the matchup, Edinboro's Lauren Hippo had tallied a career-high 30 points, and Laurel Lindsay had earned a double-double with 20 points and 10 assists, however their efforts were not enough to overcome the No. 13 Crimson Hawks.

While the second half score was close, and at times tied up, IUP was able to hold Edinboro at bay by at least one point throughout the second set of 20 minutes.

By the end of the matchup, five Crimson Hawks had posted double-figure scoring.  In addition to Stoner and Mathe, Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) finished the game with 14 points and Brooks tallied 10.

Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) made 4-of-7 from long range, finishing with a total 16 points, three boards and five assists.

As a team, the Crimson Hawks shot 56.9% from the field, 50% from three-point range and 72.7% from the foul line.  IUP added 38 rebounds, five blocks and three steals.

This win improved IUP's record to 21-2, 17-2 in the PSAC.  Currently, the Crimson Hawks sit in second place in the PSAC Western Division, just behind California (Pa.).  Following IUP is Gannon in third place, and Edinboro in fourth.

After being on the road for three straight games, the No. 13 Crimson Hawks will return home to the Kovalchick Complex Wednesday to host Slippery Rock.  Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
