No. 46 Women’s Tennis Opens Spring with Shutout Win over Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, PA – The 46th-ranked IUP women's tennis team opened the spring portion of its 2014-15 schedule with a 9-0 victory over conference opponent Seton Hill at the Greensburg Raquet Club on Sunday night.

The victory was the first dual match of the year for the Crimson Hawks, who played in four different individual tournaments in the fall.

The first decision of 2015 came from Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) and Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ), who scored an 8-2 win at the third doubles spot. Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) and newcomer Jarmila Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) followed with an 8-2 win at second doubles while Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) teamed for an 8-6 win at the top spot.

On the singles side, Wood was again the first finisher with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the fifth spot. Luise Von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) followed with a 6-1, 6-0 win at six before Petercakova picked up her first singles win at IUP with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at number three.

Timko won 7-5, 6-1 at number one, her 72nd career singles victory, tied for third all-time in program history. She's now just 10 wins away from becoming IUP's all-time leader in singles victories.

Returning to action for the first time in nearly a year, McCormick went the distance to earn the victory at number four, winning 6-1, 6-7 (5), 13-11 in a tiebreaker. Gonzalez finished things off with a 6-4, 6-4 win at number two.
