INDIANA, PA – Three seniors posted double-figure points in No. 7 IUP's 83-59 win over Clarion on Senior Night, Wednesday at the Kovalchick Complex. This win ensured the Crimson Hawks' Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division win, the first time IUP has won the west since 2008.
The victory improved the team's overall record to 24-2, their conference record to 20-2.
Prior to tipoff, the team honored five seniors before their final regular-season game at the KCAC.
Lisa Burton (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Penn Hills),
Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center),
Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana),
Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) and
Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) helped lead the team to 87 total victories over the last four seasons, with four postseason berths, a pair of NCAA tournament appearances, and the program's first PSAC West Division title since 2008.
Stamp finished the night with a team-bests 21 points, seven assists and six steals. Following close behind, defensively, was
Zhane Brooks (Erie, Pa. /Villa Maria) who tallied a career-high four steals.
Stoner posted 15 points and five boards, with Burton adding a season-high 10 points.
The Crimson Hawks waited two minutes before finally putting points on the board at the beginning of the game, when Mathe hit her first three-pointer of the night, giving IUP an early 3-2 lead. By the 15 minute mark, the Crimson Hawks had taken the lead, and held onto it throughout the rest of the matchup.
At the half, IUP was holding off Clarion 39-25.
In the blowout win, nine IUP reserves saw action off the bench including
Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic),
Amy Graham (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum),
Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana),
Monica Burns (New Stanton, Pa. /Hempfield ),
Alexis Aiken (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Allegheny), Brooks,
Halle Denman (Beaver Falls, Pa. /Blackhawk) and
Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry). These nine players added a combined 28 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals.
As a team, the Crimson Hawks shot 47.6% from the field, sinking 30-of-63 shots, with seven coming from the long range. At the foul line, IUP added 16-of-23.
Compared to Clarion's 20 turnovers, IUP finished with their second-lowest mark of the season with just seven.
In the most recent NCAA Division II Regional Rankings, released Wednesday, IUP improved from No. 3 to No. 2, sitting just behind Livingstone. These rankings will determine the eight teams who will later play in the Atlantic Regional.
As the first place team in the PSAC Western Division, the Crimson Hawks have secured a bye for the first round PSAC tournament. The team will return to the Kovalchick Complex Tuesday, March 3, to host the conference quarterfinals. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
