Women’s Lacrosse Outlasts Millersville at Home

INDIANA, Pa. – In a game that featured big runs by both teams, IUP women's lacrosse came away with a 14-12 victory over visiting Millersville on Friday afternoon at George P. Miller Stadium.
 
The Crimson Hawks improve to 4-4 on the season with the victory, including a 2-1 mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Bailey McLeish (Courtice, Ontario/Anderson C.V.I) and Brittany Palardy each scored three goals for IUP, while three others had multiple goal games.
 
The first half could have been two different games, as each team offensive dominated half of the first 30 minutes as the game went into the break tied at 5-5.
 
The Crimson Hawks struck first, getting a goal off the stick of Kim Hooven (Malvern/Great Valley) less than 30 seconds into the opening draw. IUP followed with scores by Amy Weinberg (Clarksville, MD/Atholton), Sarah Harshman, McLeish and Tara Nicholas (Germantown, MD/Northwest) to take a 5-0 at the 17:45 mark of the first half.
 
Millersville (3-4, 1-2 PSAC) came right back, going on a five-goal tear of its own over a 15:32 span to even the game before halftime.
 
IUP broke the tie early in the second half with a pair of goals by Harshman and McLeish to take a 7-5 lead. After a Millersville goal, the Crimson Hawks got three straight to take a 10-6 lead into the final 20 minutes of action.
 
The Crimson Hawks later went on a 4-0 run to open up a 14-7 lead and held off a late run by Millersville for the two-score victory.
 
Hooven, Harshman and Carissa Smith (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) also tallied two goals, offensively, while the Crimson Hawks forced Millersville into 18 turnovers on the day. Hanna Bertolo forced three turnovers and picked up four ground balls on the defensive end. McLeish and Weinberg also forced a pair of turnovers. Angela Lontoc (Columbus, OH/Dublin Scioto) played nearly 48 minutes in the net for IUP, collecting 11 saves. Weinberg also had six draw controls and three assists.
 
The Crimson Hawks finish up their three-game homestand on Tuesday when they host Edinboro at 4 p.m.
