Women’s Lacrosse Wins Third Straight with Victory over Edinboro

INDIANA, Pa. – The Crimson Hawks opened strong with 10 first half goals and cruised to a 12-9 win over visiting Edinboro in a conference women's lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon.
 
IUP improved to 5-4 overall with the victory, moving over .500 for the first time this year. The Crimson Hawks also now own a 3-1 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Edinboro falls to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in the PSAC.
 
The Fighting Scots had the first two goals of the game, but IUP rattled off the next four, including two off the stick of Kim Hooven (Malvern/Great Valley). Edinboro sprinkled in three more goals during the half, but the first 30 minutes belonged to the Crimson Hawks, who scored six more goals, including four straight to take a 10-5 lead into the half.
 
Hooven scored two more goals in the half, with Sarah Harshman, Carissa Smith (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) and Brittany Pallardy also adding in scores in the final 12:03 in the first half.
 
The scoring slowed down in the second half, with IUP not scoring until nearly 13 minutes had gone by. Smith picked up the first goal of the half, followed by a score by Amy Weinberg (Clarksville, MD/Atholton) as the Crimson Hawks took a 12-5 lead.
 
The only scores the rest of the way came from the Fighting Scots, who tallied four goals in the final 12:41 to make it a respective three-goal differential.
 
The game played evenly as IUP finished with 24 shots, 24 ground balls, had 11 draw controls and turned the ball over 15 times. Edinboro had 22 shots, 25 ground balls, 12 draw controls and 16 turnovers.
 
Hooven finished with a game-high four goals while also adding an assist. Smith, Harshman and Weinberg had two goals each, as Weinberg also tallied five assists.
 
Smith led the defensive charge, causing three turnovers and picking up four ground balls. Weinberg, Maddie Poehlman (Ellicott City, Md./Seton Keough (Howard C.C.)) and Natalie Morano (Westbury, N.Y./W.T. Clarke) also caused two turnovers each, while Morano also had four ground balls. Angela Lontoc (Columbus, OH/Dublin Scioto) and Sarah Knotts (Mount Airy, MD/Linganore) split time in goal, getting six and five saves, respectively. Lontoc added five ground balls in the net.
 
The Crimson Hawks are on the road this Saturday, playing at East Stroudsburg at 3 p.m.
