HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The 42nd-ranked IUP women's tennis lost its first match of the spring season, falling to 36th-ranked Tusculum by a score of 7-2 on Monday morning.
The day started on the singles side with the Pioneers taking two of the first three matchups.
Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) fell 6-1, 6-2 at four and
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision at three.
Louise Von Agris picked up the Crimson Hawks' first win, defeating Adrienne Kaye 6-2, 6-4 in the sixth spot. Tusculum came back to take the last three singles matches, as IUP took the Pioneers to three sets on a pair of them.
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) lost 6-1, 6-4 at five before
Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) lost 6-2, 4-5, 10-5 at two and
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) was edged 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 at the top spot.
Timko paired with Petercakova for IUP's only other win of the morning as they defeated Kealee Heffner and Kate Hutchinson 9-8 (3) at the top doubles spot. That win was the third doubles match finished, coming after McCormick and Gonzalez fell 8-1 at two and McFail and
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) lost 8-4 at three.
The Crimson Hawks fell to 3-1 on the year while Tusculum improved to 7-0. IUP is in action again tomorrow against No. 32 Palm Beach Atlantic. The match is scheduled for 3 p.m.
