SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. –
Amy Weinberg (Clarksville, MD/Atholton) broke her own school single season assist record as she helped the IUP women's lacrosse team to a 14-9 victory over Shippensburg on Friday afternoon.
The junior attacker tallied five assists on the day, breaking the record of 53 that she set last year. Weinberg now has 57 assists this year and also passed Alexa Lodovici for second all-time in program history with 126 assists. She's now just 11 shy of tying Becca Vogt's career record of 137.
The Crimson Hawks improved to 9-5 overall with the victory and hold onto third place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) with a 7-2 league record.
Bailey McLeish (Courtice, Ontario/Anderson C.V.I) scored a game-high three goals while
Tara Nicholas (Germantown, MD/Northwest),
Kim Hooven (Malvern/Great Valley),
Rachel Becker (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), and
Maddie Poehlman (Ellicott City, Md./Seton Keough (Howard C.C.)) each had two. Eight players scored for the Crimson Hawks, as each of their first seven goals came from different players. Those goals helped IUP jump out to a 7-2 lead and went into halftime with an 8-2 lead.
Shippensburg scored the first two goals of the second half to narrow the gap to 8-4 before the Crimson Hawks responded with a 3-1 run to take an 11-5 lead with just over 14 minutes to play.
Weinberg's record-setting assist came with 22:12 left in the game, finding Becker to put IUP up 10-4.
Weinberg went on to assist on IUP's remaining three goals as she tallied five dimes in the Crimson Hawks' five-goal victory.
Three different goalies saw time in the net for the Crimson Hawks, including
Angela Lontoc (Columbus, OH/Dublin Scioto) who got the start and finished with five saves.
It was the second of four straight road contests for the Crimson Hawks, who will play at West Chester (9-4, 7-3) on Saturday.
