INDIANA, Pa. – The Crimson Hawks' 10-game win streak came to an end on Saturday as California (Pa.) swept IUP in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Podbielski Field.
The Vulcans won by scores of 12-0 in a five-inning opener and 5-3 in game two. The Crimson Hawks fall to 12-14 overall and 10-6 in the PSAC West.
Cal (20-9, 14-5) scored runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, totaling 16 hits in the game one mercy rule victory. The Crimson Hawks had three hits in the game, including two by
Meghan Carney (Corry/Corry).
Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) took the loss, falling to 7-7 on the season.
The Crimson Hawks got on the scoreboard first in game two as
Rachel Francis (Jefferson, OH/Jefferson) brought home
Allison Viguers (West Chester/West Chester East) with a single to left in the second inning. IUP then went on top 2-0 in the third when Viguers singled home
Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg Area).
The Vulcans took a 3-2 lead in the fourth, getting an RBI base hit followed by a two-run homer by Megan Jahoda. IUP struck back in the bottom half, loading the bases with two outs before
Megan Gould (New Germany/Forest Hills) brought home
Lauren Hogue (Seneca/Cranberry) with an infield hit to tie the game at 3-3.
The lead went back to the Vulcans in top of the seventh with a one-out double followed by a two-run home run by Lindsay Reicoff. IUP went down in succession in the bottom half as Cal locked up the doubleheader sweep.
The Crimson Hawks had seven hits in game two, with two each by Carney and Gould. Carney finished her day by going 4-for-6 with a double.
Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, IN/Cathedral) took the loss in game two.
IUP is off on Sunday before facing a week that includes a scheduled five doubleheaders in six days. The Crimson Hawks will travel to Cal on Monday and will host Seton Hill, Mercyhurst and Pitt-Johnstown on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, respectively.
