Crimson Hawks Swept by Cal on the Road

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Vulcans got the best of IUP for the second straight doubleheader as the Crimson Hawks dropped both ends of a conference softball twin bill at California (Pa.) on Monday afternoon.

Cal picked up wins of 11-0 in the opening game and 7-1 in game two. The losses drop the Crimson Hawks to 12-16 overall and 10-8 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division. Cal improves to 22-9 and 14-7.

IUP had just two hits in the first game, with one of those being a double by Allison Viguers (West Chester/West Chester East). The Vulcans scored at least two runs in each of the first four innings en route to the five-inning mercy rule victory. Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) got the start in the circle and took the loss for the Crimson Hawks.

Five total home runs were hit in the second game, although just one by the Crimson Hawks coming off the bat of Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center). Fairman's shot, the first of her career, came with two outs in the second inning. The Vulcans had two home runs in the fourth and one each in the fifth and sixth inning in their six-run victory. Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, IN/Cathedral) started and went the distance for the Crimson Hawks, taking the loss.

Today's games were the start of a busy nine-day stretch for the Crimson Hawks that includes seven doubleheaders – including five at home – as they wrap up the regular season.

IUP will host Seton Hill on Tuesday afternoon and Mercyhurst on Wednesday, followed by Pitt-Johnstown on Friday.
