Box Score UPDATE: Picking up in the second overtime from a suspended game on Sept. 12, the IUP field hockey team fell to No. 1 Millersville 2-1 on the road on Friday night. The Marauders wasted little time in ending the game in sudden death, scoring just 3:44 into the period. It was the first shot of the period and came 15 seconds after Millersville was granted a penalty corner.
The game originally began on Sept. 12, but after 70 minutes of regulation and 15 minutes of the first overtime period, the game was called due to inclement weather and a poor playing surface. The Crimson Hawks have a scheduled game at No. 4 West Chester on Saturday, combining the trip with the make up of this game.
IUP officially falls to 4-5 overall on the season while Millersville improves to 9-0.
MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Playing without starting goalkeeper
Alyssa Lerda (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland), freshman
Olivia Accardi (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) stepped in against defending Division II national champion Millersville as the two teams battled to a 1-1 scoreline before the game was suspended on Saturday afternoon.
Because of a constant downpour, the game was delayed before the second overtime period could begin. The game is not yet official and will be scheduled and completed at a later date.
Sophomore
Brittany Thornton (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) scored her first goal of the season on a pass at the top of the circle from fellow sophomore
McKenzie Noll (Lewisburg, Pa./Mifflinburg). The goal was all IUP could muster, as the Crimson Hawks recorded just three shots and two penalty corners for the game.
Accardi made five saves and the IUP defense held No. 1 Millersville in check until a late goal with just more than a minute remaining in regulation forced the overtime period.
The Crimson Hawks returns to action Saturday against Kutztown with game time set for 5 p.m.
