Zerbe's Hat-Trick Leads Women's Soccer Offensive Explosion in Win

INDIANA, Pa. - Behind a Kiersten Zerbe (Danville, Pa. /Danville) hat-trick and three assists and a goal by Erica Boyle (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney), the IUP women's soccer team jumped out to an early 5-0 lead en route to a 7-4 win over Mansfield Saturday.

Sophomore Lexie Palluconi (Penfield, N.Y./Fairport) scored her third goal of the season just over four minutes into the match, while two goals from the junior Zerbe put IUP up 3-0. Freshman Hannah Stoof (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and Boyle, a sophomore, continued the offensive parade as the Crimson Hawks built up a 5-0 lead 26 minutes into the game.

Mansfield (0-3) answered with two goals late in the first half and another two in the early second half to close the IUP lead to 5-4 before Zerbe answered with her third goal of the afternoon to get the Crimson Hawks back up 6-4.

Palluconi finished off the scoring as she dribbled down the sideline after receiving a throw-in from Zerbe and beat the Mansfield goalkeeper for her second goal of the day. She also had an assist on Zerbe's second goal.

IUP finished the afternoon with 21 shots, with 17 of those on goal. The seven goals was the most scored in a game by the Crimson Hawks since a 10-0 win over Shepherd on Sept. 4, 2010.

IUP, now 2-1-1 on the season, gets back in action Tuesday with a home match against Gannon. Kickoff at South Campus Field is set for 4 p.m.
