No. 8 Gannon drops Crimson Hawks, 3-1

INDIANA, Pa. - Sophomore Brandie Bryant (Essex, Md./Eastern Technical) scored a late-first half goal, but No.8 Gannon was too much for IUP women's soccer in a 3-1 defeat at South Campus Field on Tuesday.

The Crimson Hawks' work was cut out for themselves when Gannon scored a goal just 4:15 into the match. The Golden Knights doubled their lead 17 minutes into the game to take a 2-0 lead.

Down two goals, IUP picked up the pace and strung series of passes together and worked the ball in the midfield, keeping the pressure up on Gannon. Along with two saves in the half from junior goalkeeper Jessica Printz (Fairfax, Va./WT Woodson), the offensive attack, led by reigning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women's Soccer Athlete of the Week Kiersten Zerbe (Danville, Pa. /Danville), kept the pressure up and accounted for three shots in the half.

After earning a corner kick in the 41st minute, Bryant was in the right place at the right time when the Gannon goalkeeper deflected the ball, leaving Bryant in prime position to cut into the lead with her first goal of the season.

Gannon (5-0, 4-0), though answered back quickly, and took at 3-1 lead into the halftime intermission. In the second half, both offenses had chances to score and both defenses came up with big plays.

Printz finished the game with three saves and Lexie Palluconi (Penfield, N.Y./Fairport) and Bryant accounted for all the shots for the offense.

IUP, now 2-2-1 on the season and 2-1-1 in the PSAC, gets back in action Saturday with an away match against Slippery Rock. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
