INDIANA, Pa. – Senior point guard
Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic) led four players in double figures and the Crimson Hawks used a big third quarter in the team's 64-49 victory over Seton Hill on Wednesday.
Wareham scored eight of IUP's 12 second-quarter points, as both teams struggled to connect from the field in the first half before heating up after halftime. The Crimson Hawks connected on just 31 percent from the field (9-29 FG), while Seton Hill shot 22.2 percent (6-27 FG).
IUP, however, helped itself by hitting four three-pointers in the half and limiting the Griffins to single-digit scoring in both quarters, while jumping out to a 7-0 lead within the game's first four minutes, to take a 23-14 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, senior forward Zhané Brooks had the hot hand for the Crimson Hawks, scoring 14 of her 16 points after halftime. She now has scored in double-figures in four-straight games and six of her last seven to raise her average to 13.8 points per game, which ranks second on the team.
IUP shot 41.4 percent in the second half (12-29 FG), but went to the free throw line 19 times, making 13. Wareham converted on four three-pointers, as the Crimson Hawks made eight from behind the arc.
Sophomore combo guard
Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) and senior guard
Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) joined Wareham and Brooks in double-figures, scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively. Smith hauled down seven rebounds and blocked two shots.
Senior forward
Alexis Aiken (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Allegheny) scored only one point, but grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, dished out two assists, had two steals and blocked one shot in 27 minutes on the court.
With the victory, IUP moves to 14-4 overall and 11-3 in the PSAC West and has now won two in a row after a the team's seven-game winning streak was snapped Jan. 13 in an 87-86 overtime heartbreaker to Pitt-Johnstown. Seton Hill drops to 10-9 overall and 6-7 in the division.
The Crimson Hawks have a week off to prepare for a matchup against defending national champion California (Pa.). IUP defeated the Vulcans, 78-72, in the team's first meeting Dec. 16 in Indiana.
