SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Sophomores
Matti Reightler (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) and
Selena West (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) as well as senior
Amber Bailey (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) each scored a goal as the IUP field hockey team recorded a 3-1 victory at Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Crimson Hawks improve to 7-5 overall behind a 3-3 mark in league play. Meanwhile, The Rock falls to 5-9 overall and 2-4 in conference action.
The trio each scored first half goals as Reightler started the scoring with her first tally of the season at the 12:37-mark when she scored to the left of the cage. The score remained 1-0 until West scored off of a penalty corner in the 24th minute.
Madelyn Mullen (Chester Springs, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) was credited with the assist after West deflected the shot into the back of the cage. The Crimson Hawks then took a 3-0 halftime lead when Bailey scored after a shot from West was saved at the 29:03-mark.
West nearly extended the lead to 4-0 just minutes into the second half as her shot was saved off a penalty corner. Senior goalie
Alyssa Lerda (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) saved a shot from Kayla Mack at the 41:33-mark to keep The Rock off the scoreboard. Slippery Rock found the back of the cage in the 55th minute when Allison Grant scored off an assist from Kailee Krupski.
Lerda made all eight of her saves in the second half in earning the win while The Rock goalie Nicole Bream made three saves in suffering the loss.
Slippery Rock outshot IUP by an 11-6 margin, including a 12-7 edge in penalty corners.
The Crimson Hawks continue their four game PSAC road trip on Tuesday, October 18 when they travel to East Stroudsburg for a 3:30 p.m. start.
