INDIANA, Pa. – The 13th-ranked Crimson Hawks totaled 411 rushing yards and outscored Clarion 35-3 in the second half, en route to a 42-17 blowout victory of the Golden Eagles on Saturday afternoon at George P. Miller Stadium.
IUP ran 258 yards on 46 carries in the second half alone, controlling the clock for 20:10 of the game's final 30 minutes of action. The three-headed monster of junior running back
Chris Temple (Malvern, Pa. /Great Valley), redshirt sophomore quarterback
Lenny Williams, Jr. (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox), and freshman running back
Samir Bullock (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) combined for 264 yards in that dominating second half.
Those three also became the first IUP trio since 1994 to all rush for 100 yards in the same game. Temple finished with 153 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries, his best game of the year. Bullock ran for 126 yards and a score on 24 carries, and Williams finished with 115 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.
The 411 yards by IUP is the fifth most in a single game in school history, and the most since the 433-yard output against East Stroudsburg in 2006.
The Crimson Hawks totaled 594 yards in the game, the ninth highest total in school history.
IUP overcame three turnovers, nine penalties, and a 14-7 halftime deficit to earn the win. The Crimson Hawks improved to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the PSAC West. Clarion fell to 2-6 and 1-4.
The game turned around in the trenches, with the IUP offensive and defensive lines setting the tone and wearing out the Golden Eagles.
IUP tied the game at 14-14 early in the third quarter with a 68-yard pass play from Williams to junior receiver
Allen Wright (McKeesport, Pa. /McKeesport Area) on a slant. After a Clarion field goal, Williams scored his first rushing touchdown from six yards out, capping a 10-play, 75-yard scoring drive.
Williams finished an efficient 10-of-15 through the air for 183 yards and a touchdown. Through seven games he has 22 touchdowns, already eclipsing last year's total of 21 in 12 games.
Wright had three catches for 86 yards and that score, while graduate receiver
Chris Wuestner (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) had four grabs for 40 yards, redshirt freshman receiver
JoJo Gause (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) had two for 43 yards, and junior receiver
Devin Altland (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) had a catch for 14 yards.
The domination continued in the fourth quarter, owning the ball for 11:05 while scoring three times. Temple plunged in from 10 yards out early in the quarter, while Williams had a three-yarder at the midway point, and Bullock somersaulted into the end zone from a yard out with 2:39 left to put the finishing touches on the win.
The defensive effort was led by senior linebacker
Kevin Clarke (West Mifflin, Pa. /West Mifflin) and sophomore defensive end
Deandre Easterling (Washington, D.C./Gonzaga). Clarke finished with 14 tackles, 1.5 tackles-for-loss, and a third quarter interception, while Easterling sacked Clarion quarterback Jeff Clemens three times, with two of those coming in the second half. Easterling also had six total tackles.
The IUP defense limited Clarion to just 12 total yards in the second half, including negative-10 rushing yards. The Crimson Hawks totaled 10 tackles-for-loss as a team and broke up five passes. The Golden Eagles ran just 24 plays in the second half, with two drives ending with IUP interceptions.
Those interceptions came from Clarke and junior safety
Takhi Turner (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Twp.). Junior corner
Jay Watkins (Chester, Pa. /Hyde School) had a third IUP interception, picking off a Clemens pass in the end zone midway through the second quarter.
Clemens finished 11-of-32 for 125 yards, a touchdown and those three interceptions. Clarion's Kyle Evans ran for 112 yards on 13 carries, including a 68-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
The Crimson Hawks will now wait for the season's initial NCAA regional rankings, which will be released on Monday afternoon. The rankings determine the seven teams in each of Division II's four regions that advance to the NCAA playoffs. IUP has three games left on its regular season schedule.
That three-game stretch begins next week on the road at Gannon. Kickoff in Erie is scheduled for 12 p.m.
