EDINBORO, Pa. –
Cassidy LeDonne (Murrysville, Pa. /Franklin Regional) connected on a header in the 78th minute to give IUP women's soccer a 2-1 lead as the Crimson Hawks upset 23rd-ranked Edinboro on Tuesday night.
The victory was the first win for the Crimson Hawks over a ranked team this season, as they improved to 9-8 overall and 8-7 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
They also kept pace with Shippensburg for the seventh spot in the PSAC standings. IUP and the Raiders are tied with 24 points and will face each other in Saturday's regular season finale in what will be a must-win matchup. Bloomsburg, one spot back of IUP and Shippensburg with 23 points, faces Clarion (2-13-2) on Saturday night.
LeDonne's score came off of a free kick from
Hannah Stoof (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) with just over 12 minutes remaining.
The Fighting Scots (12-3-1, 11-3-1 PSAC) had several chances down the stretch to send the game to overtime, getting of four shots in the final 10 minutes. Two of those shots were off the mark, while the IUP defense came up with two huge blocks on the others to keep Edinboro out of the net.
IUP struck first, scoring in the 23rd minute when
McKenna Keffel (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) scored off of a rebound with
Lexie Palluconi (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) tallying the assist. The Crimson Hawks kept Edinboro off the board until the 58th minute when the Fighting Scots scored after an offside call on IUP.
Edinboro had 18 total shots on the night, but just four on goal as IUP keeper
Jessica Printz (Fairfax, Va./WT Woodson) had three saves.
Saturday's game will be Senior Day as the Crimson Hawks celebrate the careers of Printz,
Kiersten Zerbe (Danville, Pa. /Danville),
Courtney McHugh (Hummelstown, Pa. /Hershey) and
Kristin Buchanan (Bellefonte, Pa. /Bellefonte). Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
