Reightler leads IUP Field Hockey to Senior Day win over Kutztown

INDIANA, Pa. – Sophomore Matti Reightler (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) scored the lone goal as the IUP field hockey team recorded a 1-0 victory over tenth-ranked Kutztown in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) regular season finale this afternoon at Miller Stadium.

With the win, the Crimson Hawks improve to 10-7 overall behind a 5-5 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Golden Bears fall to 10-8 and 4-6 in conference competition.

Prior to the game, IUP celebrated senior day by honoring the senior class of Amber Bailey (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra), Ericka Griffith (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), Sarah Zielinski (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth), Jenn Mengle (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg), Haley Fidler (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood), Olivia Young (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) and Olivia Bair (Dover, Pa./Dover).

The first half was evenly played as both IUP and Kutztown totaled three shots each in the half. The Crimson Hawks did not waste time as Griffith nearly found the back of the cage at the 2:48-mark. Just a few minutes later Alyssa Lerda (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) saved a shot from Megan Tiwold and Madison Stewart. Zielinski had a her shot off a penalty corner blocked in the 12th minute. IUP had its last scoring chance of the first half come as a shot from Selena West (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) was blocked in the 21st minute.

In the second half, Kutztown had four penalty corners in a three-minute stretch but was only able to produce one shot that went wide. Lerda made another save on a shot from Stewart in the 58th minute. The game remained scoreless until the 60th minute when Reightler scored her sixth goal of the season.

Lerda made four saves as she recorded her second shutout of the season. Chardonnay Hope made two saves in suffering the loss.

The Crimson Hawks return to action when they travel to third seed West Chester for a PSAC quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday, November 1.
