SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Sophomore guard
Carolyn Appleby (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Central Catholic) scored a game-high 17 points and junior forward
Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) added 16 points, but IUP women's basketball dropped their second game of the weekend with a 54-51 loss to UVA-Wise on Saturday afternoon.
The game was the second of IUP's season-opening weekend at Shippensburg's Wolf's Bus Lines Classic.
Appleby and Smith's 33 combined points were 65 percent of the Crimson Hawks (0-2) overall total. The two together shot 14-of-27 from the field, but the entire team shot 37.5 percent from the floor for the game.
The Crimson Hawks used an 18-point second quarter output to take a 26-15 lead into halftime, shooting nearly 41 percent from the field. IUP then took a 12-point lead into the fourth quarter, but UVA-Wise went on an 18-4 run to take a 48-46 lead with 1:12 to play. Smith hit a jumper with 51 seconds to play to tie the game, but UVA-Wise connected on four foul shots down the stretch to seal the comeback win.
Sophomore forward
Brittany Robinson (Harrisburg, Pa. /Central Dauphin East), still recovering from an injury last season, grabbed 11 rebounds, blocked four shots and had two steals in 28 minutes.
IUP is back in action next weekend with a pair of PSAC crossover games at Lock Haven on Saturday and at Bloomsburg on Sunday.
UPDATE: Smith was named to the All-Tournament team, averaging 16.0 points and 6.0 rebounds, while shooting 48.1 percent from the field during the weekend.
