Carolyn Appleby (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Central Catholic) scored a game-high 20 points while junior
Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) added 17 points and seven rebounds as IUP recorded an 80-46 victory over Lock Haven in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener on Saturday afternoon at Thomas Fieldhouse.
With the win the Crimson Hawks improve to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC. Meanwhile, the Bald Eagles fall to 1-2 overall behind a 0-1 mark in league play.
Appleby connected on 8-of-19 shots while adding three assists, three steals and one rebound. Smith was 6-of-12 from the floor with seven rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block. Redshirt sophomore
Lauren Wolosik (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Catholic) added 13 points, four steals, two assists and two rebounds.
IUP began the game on a 10-3 run after an Appleby jumper at the 6:25-mark. The Crimson Hawks shot 4-of-7 from the floor and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc and forced three Bald Eagle turnovers during the run. IUP then pushed the lead to 22-9 with a 14-6 run to end the first quarter.
The Crimson Hawks extended the lead to 27-13 after
Brittany Robinson (Harrisburg, Pa. /Central Dauphin East) converted a traditional three-point play midway through the second quarter. A jumper from Wolosik with just under a minute left in the quarter gave IUP a 31-17 halftime lead.
A pair of free throws from Wolosik pushed the lead to 39-17 two minutes into the third quarter. Kayla Henderson pulled Lock Haven to within 48-26 with a layup at the 3:33-mark. The Crimson Hawks responded and extended the lead to 59-29 after a layup from Appleby right before the quarter ended.
Early in the fourth quarter the Bald Eagles cut the lead to 61-38 after a pair of free throws from Henderson at the 7:43-mark. IUP answered by taking a 72-40 lead after a layup from
Kendall Hunter (Burke, Va. /Paul VI Catholic) midway through the quarter. The Crimson Hawks led by as many as 34 before finishing out the win.
The Crimson Hawks shot nearly 48.0 percent (32-of-67) from the floor including 35.0 percent (7-of-20) from beyond the arc. The Bald Eagles shot just 31.4 percent (16-of-51) from the field and 37.5 percent (3-of-8) from three-point range. IUP held a slim 36-35 edge in rebounds while forcing 30 Lock Haven turnovers.
IUP returns to PSAC play tomorrow when it travels to Bloomsburg with tip-off set for 1 p.m.
