BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore guard
Carolyn Appleby (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Central Catholic) scored 15 of her 22 points in the second half, helping lead an IUP second half comeback as the Crimson Hawks defeated Bloomsburg 68-58 on Sunday afternoon.
The 22 was a new career-high for Appleby, who eclipsed the 20 points she posted on Saturday at Lock Haven. It was the second straight win for the Crimson Hawks, who improved to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
IUP shot 50 percent in the second half, going 16-of-32 after converting just 30 percent of its field goal attempts in the first half. The Crimson Hawks outscored Bloomsburg 42-28 in the final 20 minutes of play.
Trailing by 10 early in the third quarter, IUP used three-pointers by Appleby and guard
Lauren Wolosik (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Catholic) during a 13-2 run to take a 39-38 lead at the 4:30 mark. The lead was the first of the game for the Crimson Hawks.
Wolosik hit another three in the quarter and Appleby totaled 10 points in the third as IUP took a 48-43 lead into the final quarter.
Bloomsburg (0-2, 0-2) closed the gap to three just two minutes into the fourth, but IUP shut the Huskies down with a 12-5 run over five minutes, highlighted by back-to-back buckets from freshman
Maura D'Anna (Springfield, Va./West Springfield). The lead reached as many as 12 as the Crimson Hawks wrapped up their second win of the weekend.
Appleby finished 7-of-16 from the floor, including 4-of-8 from three-point range. Wolosik scored 10 points and dished out six assists, while forward
Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) and D'Anna each tallied 10 points.
