INDIANA, Pa. – Redshirt sophomore
Lauren Wolosik (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Catholic) and freshman
Maura D'Anna (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) each scored a team-high 14 points in leading the IUP women's basketball team to an 82-43 victory over Bowie State in non-conference action at the Kovalchick Complex this afternoon.
With the win the Crimson Hawks improve to 3-2 overall while opening the home portion of their schedule. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs drop to 3-2.
D'anna was a perfect 7-of-7 from the floor while adding four rebounds and two steals. Wolosik connected on 4-of-7 shots including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc and totaled five assists, four rebounds and one steal. Junior
Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) scored 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting to go along with seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal. Sophomore
Carolyn Appleby (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Central Catholic) added 11 points and two assists.
IUP opened the first quarter on a 10-4 run after Appleby converted a traditional three-point play at the 6:53-mark. Smith then pushed the lead to 19-8 after a three-pointer before a three-pointer from Wolosik extended the lead to 22-10. The Crimson Hawks lengthened the lead to 14 (29-15) after a layup from
Brittany Robinson (Harrisburg, Pa. /Central Dauphin East) midway through the second quarter before taking a 37-22 halftime lead.
The Crimson Hawks put the game out of reach in the third quarter as they used a 15-4 run to push the lead to 52-26. IUP connected on 5-of-6 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the free throw line while limiting Bowie State to just 1-of-11 from the field during the run. IUP extended the lead to 64-33 after a jumper from
Madison Kerr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Peters Township) at the 8:20-mark of the fourth quarter. Later in the quarter Kerr hit a three-pointer to give the Crimson Hawks a 76-42 lead with 2:52 to play.
IUP shot at a nearly 58.0 percent (33-of-57) clip while limiting Bowie State to just 20.6 percent (13-of-63) from field. The Crimson Hawks scored 19 points off 12 Bulldog turnovers while the IUP bench outscored Bowie State by a 32-11 margin. Bowie State held a slim 40-37 edge in rebounds.
