Smith & Robinson Lead Crimson Hawks to 69-59 win over Shippensburg

INDIANA, Pa. – Junior guard Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) tied her career-high with 25 points and sophomore Brittany Robinson (Harrisburg, Pa. /Central Dauphin East) set a career-high with seven blocks as the IUP women's basketball team recorded a 69-59 victory over Shippensburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Kovalchick Complex.

With the win, the Crimson Hawks improve to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the PSAC. Meanwhile the Raiders fall to 5-2 overall behind a 1-2 conference mark.

Smith was 8-of-13 from the floor, including 9-for-11 from the free throw line. She added eight rebounds (four offensive), three assists, three steals and two blocks. Robinson, who recorded the most blocks in a single game for the Crimson Hawks since Smith tallied five blocks on January 16, 2016, nearly recorded a triple double. She scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds. Sophomore Carolyn Appleby (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Central Catholic) added 14 points and redshirt sophomore Lauren Wolosik (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Catholic) totaled 13 points, six rebounds, and four assists.

IUP jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in the first quarter after a layup from Smith. Shippensburg then answered with an 11-3 run to take a 14-10 lead at the 2:06-mark. The Crimson Hawks pushed the lead to 19-16 at the 8:13-mark of the second quarter thanks to a Wolosik layup. Shippensburg once again responded with an 11-7 run over a nearly six-minute stretch to take a 27-24 lead with 2:56 to play in the half. The Crimson Hawks then took a 28-27 halftime lead.

IUP opened the third quarter on a 13-2 run to take a 40-29 lead at the 7:27-mark after a layup from Robinson. The Crimson Hawks extended the lead to 48-35 after a layup from Smith. At the beginning of the fourth quarter IUP used a 10-3 run to push the lead to 62-44 on a free throw from Smith. The Raiders cut the lead to just 10 at the 3:58-mark after a 12-5 run on a layup from Logan Snyder but could not get any closer.

Snyder was one of three Raiders to score in double figures as she totaled 12 points. Stephanie Knauer added 15 points while Lauren Gold scored 13 points.

The Crimson Hawks shot at a 47.3 percent (26-of-55) clip while the Raiders shot 37.9 percent (22-of-58) from the field. IUP held a 36-31 edge in rebounds while also scoring 42 points in the paint.
