INDIANA, Pa. - Four Crimson Hawks scored in double-figures as the IUP women's basketball team recorded a 75-67 victory over Kutztown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Sunday afternoon at the Kovalchick Complex.
With the win IUP improves to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in PSAC play while extending its winning streak to five games. Meanwhile, Kutztown falls to 2-6 overall behind a 1-3 league mark.
Sophomore
Carolyn Appleby (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Central Catholic) scored a team-high 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting while adding three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Classmate
Brittany Robinson (Harrisburg, Pa. /Central Dauphin East) totaled 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting and added four rebounds and two blocks. Junior
Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds while redshirt sophomore
Lauren Wolosik (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Catholic)Â scored 10 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists.Â
The Crimson Hawks and Golden Bears exchanged baskets for the first few minutes of the first quarter before IUP used a 9-3 run to take a 14-5 lead at the 3:33-mark on a jumper from Smith. Kutztown responded and cut the IUP lead to 19-14 on a Kara Funk free-throw with just over eight minutes remaining in the second quarter. Jenna Altomare then pulled the Golden Bears to within 23-20 midway through the second quarter on a three-pointer. The Crimson Hawks then countered by finishing the half on a 7-2 run after a
Maura D'Anna (Springfield, Va./West Springfield)Â layup. to take a 30-22 lead.
IUP then pulled ahead after beginning the third quarter on a 12-5 run to take a 42-27 lead at the 6:24-mark on an Appleby three-pointer. Kutztown kept the game within striking distance through the end of the third quarter before using a 6-0 run to start the fourth quarter to pull to within 53-47 at the 8:13-mark. The Crimson Hawks wasted no time in pushing the lead to 64-49 after a Smith three-pointer highlighted an 11-4 run midway through the fourth quarter. Funk then cut the IUP lead to 67-59 on a jumper with 1:09 to play before the Crimson Hawks earned the win.
The Crimson Hawks shot 48.2 percent (27-of-56) from the field, including 71.4 percent (5-of-7) from beyond the arc. The Golden Bears shot just 39.4 percent (26-of-66) from the floor while connecting on just 3-of-10 from three-point range. Both IUP and Kutztown recorded 35 rebounds. The Crimson Hawks held a decided advantages with 38 points in the paint compared to 18 for the Golden Bears.
