INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP women's basketball team extended its winning streak to six games with a 61-38 victory over Mansfield in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play at the Kovalchick Complex on Saturday evening.
With the win the Crimson Hawks move to 6-2 overall and 5-0 in PSAC play. Meanwhile, the Mountaineers fall to 2-6 overall and 0-5 in league play.
Nine different IUP players scored as junior
Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) a game-high 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting. She added seven rebounds (five offensive), two assists, and one block in the win. Sophomore
Carolyn Appleby (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Central Catholic) scored nine points while tallying six rebounds and three assists.
Halle Denman (Beaver Falls, Pa. /Blackhawk) scored eight points while
Brittany Robinson (Harrisburg, Pa. /Central Dauphin East) (six points),
Lauren Wolosik (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Catholic) (five points),
Kendall Hunter (Burke, Va. /Paul VI Catholic) (seven points),
Ana Hollen (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood) (six points),
Maura D'Anna (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) (four points) and
Lexie Griggs (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) (two points) rounded out the scoring. D'Anna also added a career-high 10 rebounds.
The Crimson Hawks took an early 12-9 lead midway through the first quarter on a jumper from Appleby. IUP then closed out the first quarter on an 11-3 run to take a 21-12 lead before the Crimson Hawks pushed the lead to 31-17 midway through the second quarter on a layup from Appleby. The lead then grew to 40-18 at the 1:08-mark of the second quarter after an 11-1 IUP run.
In the third quarter the Crimson Hawks used an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 25 (48-23) midway through the quarter after a layup from Hollen. Later in the third, the Crimson Hawks pushed the lead to 57-23 on a three-pointer from Hunter. Mansfield opened the fourth quarter on a 10-3 run to cut the lead to 57-33 at the 5:00-mark before the Crimson Hawks earned the win.
IUP shot 37.3 percent (25-of-67) from the floor compared to just 25.5 percent (14-of-55) for Mansfield. The Crimson Hawks held a 50-38 rebounding margin, including an 18-10 edge on the offensive glass.
Brielle Kelly led the Mountaineers with a team-high 12 points as Mary Kate Rumbaugh added seven points and Alyssa Mullins totaled six points.
