INDIANA, Pa. – Sophomore
Jacobo Diaz (Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain/CBA Gran Canaria) scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the No. 24 IUP men's basketball team recorded an 80-67 victory over Bowie State on Tuesday night in non-conference play at the Kovalchick Complex.
With the win, the Crimson Hawks improve to 3-0. Meanwhile Bowie State falls to 1-2 on the season.
Diaz, who recorded his second consecutive double-double, added five assists, three steals and one block and was one of four Crimson Hawks to score in double figures. Junior
Anthony Glover (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) scored 19 points on 8-for-13 shooting while sophomore
Dante Lombardi (Indiana, Pa./The Kiski School) tallied 13 points and nine assists. Redshirt junior
Blake Danielak (Georgetown, Tex./Liberty Hill) added 10 points.
The Crimson Hawks opened the game on a 12-2 run which was highlighted by a Diaz layup at the 15:47-mark. Four different players scored for IUP during the run including Diaz, Glover, Lombardi, and Danielak. Moments later Diaz pushed the lead to 15-4 on a three-pointer. Bowie State pulled to within 19-11 after a layup from Ahmaad Wilson midway through the half.
IUP responded with consecutive three-pointers to push the lead to 25-11 at the 8:55-mark. The Bulldogs answered with a 13-8 run over a 5:31 stretch to pull to within 30-24 with just over four minutes to play in the half before the Crimson Hawks took a 37-28 halftime lead.
The Crimson Hawks opened the second half on a 10-5 run to take a 44-33 lead at the 16:40-mark on baskets from Lombardi, Glover and
Ayron Hutton (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry). A three-pointer from Dayshawn Wells cut the IUP lead to 44-37 at the 16:06-mark. The Bulldogs responded with a 16-6 run to cut the Crimson Hawks lead to 58-57 with 7:32 to play. IUP answered with a 9-2 run after a Diaz three-pointer pushed the lead back to 10 with just over six minutes left. From there, the Crimson Hawks did not allow the Bulldogs to get any closer than seven points en route to the win.
The Bulldogs were led by a team-high 21 points from Wilson while Omari George added 19 points.
IUP shot 50.0 percent (29-of-58) from the field including 40.7 percent (11-of-27) from beyond the arc. Bowie State shot at a 45.6 percent (26-of-57) clip. The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Crimson Hawks by a 34-29 margin while IUP forced 19 turnovers, including 12 steals.
The Crimson Hawks begin Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Friday as they travel to Lock Haven with tip-off set for 3 p.m.
