LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Sophomore
Jacobo Diaz (Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain/CBA Gran Canaria) recorded his third consecutive double-double as he totaled 21 points and 13 rebounds as IUP recorded a 73-59 victory at Lock Haven in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon at Thomas Fieldhouse.
With the win, the No. 24 Crimson Hawks improve to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in PSAC play. Meanwhile the Bald Eagles fall to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in conference competition.
Diaz added five assists and one steal and was one of four IUP players to score in double figures. Redshirt junior
Blake Danielak (Georgetown, Tex./Liberty Hill) totaled 20 points, sophomore
Dante Lombardi (Indiana, Pa./The Kiski School) scored 11 points and junior
Anthony Glover (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) tallied 10 points. Danielak added six rebounds while Lombardi chipped in with seven assists and one steal.
The Crimson Hawks jumped out to an early 9-5 lead after a three-pointer from Lombardi at the 14:54-mark. The Bald Eagles tied the game at 11-11 two minutes later with a jumper from Brahieme Jackson. IUP countered with a 17-5 run over a nearly eight-minute stretch to push the lead to 28-16 with just over four minutes to play before halftime. The Crimson Hawks connected on 7-of-11 shots including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc and had five different players score during the run. The Bald Eagles ended the half on an 11-7 run to pull to within 35-28 at the intermission.
In the second half Lock Haven cut the IUP lead to 40-37 after a dunk from Amir Hinton at the 16:11-mark. The Crimson Hawks responded with a 21-8 run to push the lead to 61-45, highlighted by a three-pointer from Lombardi at the 8:28-mark. IUP was 8-of-12 from the floor including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. From there, the Crimson Hawks never let the Bald Eagles get closer than 14 point the rest of the game.
The Crimson Hawks shot at a 44.6 percent (29-of-65) clip, including a blistering 51.7 percent (15-of-29) in the second half. The Bald Eagles shot 42.4 percent (25-of-59) and nearly 54.0 percent (14-of-26) in the second half. IUP out-rebounded Lock Haven by a 40-31 margin, including a 15-10 margin on the offensive glass.
IUP continues PSAC play tomorrow when it travels to Bloomsburg with tip-off set for 3 p.m.
