INDIANA, Pa. – Trailing 70-66 with less than 30 seconds remaining, the No. 15 IUP men's basketball team used a 9-0 run to record a 75-70 non-conference win over Alderson Broaddus in the IRMC/Hilton Garden Inn Classic at the Kovalchick Complex on Friday night.
With the win, the Crimson Hawks improve to 6-0 overall. Meanwhile, the Battlers fall to 1-4 on the season.
Junior
Anthony Glover (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) scored a team-high 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting to go along with five rebounds and two assists. Sophomore
Jacobo Diaz (Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain/CBA Gran Canaria) totaled 14 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals. Sophomore
Dante Lombardi (Indiana, Pa./The Kiski School) added 15 points and six assists. Redshirt junior
Blake Danielak (Georgetown, Tex./Liberty Hill) added 13 points off the bench.
Glover made a layup with 21 seconds to play to cut the Alderson Broaddus lead to 70-68. After an IUP timeout, the Crimson Hawks forced a Battler turnover. On the ensuing possession, Lombardi connected on a three-pointer to give IUP a 71-70 lead with 14 seconds to play before making four straight free-throws to seal the win.
In the first half, IUP raced out to an early 11-4 lead after a layup from Lombardi just before the first media timeout. Alderson Broaddus then cut the lead to 14-13 midway through the half on a jumper from Chavez Harper. The Battlers then pushed their lead to 23-21 on a three-pointer from Exzavier Cooper at the 4:30-mark. Just over two minutes later Alderson Broaddus took a 28-23 lead on a three-pointer by Mike Mitchell.
The Crimson Hawks began the second half with a traditional three-point play from Diaz at the 19:51-mark to tie the game at 33-33. IUP then seized momentum and used a 15-6 run over a nearly five-minute stretch to take a 48-39 lead after a layup from Danielak. The Crimson Hawks made 7-of-8 shots from the field and limited the Battlers to just 2-of-6 shooting during the run.
Alderson Broaddus answered with a 15-6 run of its own take a 54-52 lead with 8:05 to play after a jumper from Sam Sanders. With 2:18 to play, Diaz hit a pair of free-throws to tie the game at 64-64. Alderson Broaddus took a 69-66 lead with 43 seconds remaining on a three-pointer from Sanders before a free-throw from Dorrell Foster set the stage for a drama-filled comeback attempt by the Crimson Hawks.
IUP shot at a 46.8 percent (29-of-62) clip, including a sizzling 54.8 percent (17-of-31) in the second half. Alderson Broaddus shot 39.7 percent (25-of-63). The Battlers held a 43-32 rebounding edge while the Crimson Hawks held a distinctive edge in points in the paint (44-14).
