SALEM, Va. –
Alaina Montgomery (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield) gave the Crimson Hawks a 4-3 win over UVA-Wise with a walk-off single, highlighting IUP's split in West Virginia Wesleyan's tournament in Salem, Va. on Saturday morning.
Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg Area) scored the game-winner on the Montgomery hit, easily walking in from third base. She led off the inning with a single before stealing second and moving to third on another single by
Megan Gould (New Germany/Forest Hills).
The Crimson Hawks opened the scoring in the first inning when
Allison Viguers (West Chester/West Chester East) blasted a two-run home run over the fence in center field. UVA-Wise took the lead in the third, scoring three runs off of starter
Brooke Darling (Springville, PA/Elk Lake). IUP tied the score in the fourth on an RBI single by
Rachel Francis (Jefferson, OH/Jefferson), scoring
Taylor Mercurio (Pittsburgh/Seton-La Salle).
Mercer had three of the Crimson Hawks' eight hits against UVA-Wise, with Francis adding two base knocks. Darling scattered four hits in her complete game, striking out five batters.
IUP dropped its afternoon game, 7-0 to Le Moyne. The Dolphins scored runs in the first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, and allowed just two IUP base runners.
The Crimson Hawks, now 8-6 on the year, wrap up play in Salem on Sunday with games against Concord and Glenville State.
