Softball Finishes Trip to Virginia with Two Sunday Wins

SALEM, Va. – The IUP softball team picked up their ninth and 10th wins of the season on Sunday, defeating Concord 8-3 and Glenville State 12-0 at West Virginia Wesleyan's tournament in Salem, Va.

The Crimson Hawks improved to 10-6 on the season, going 3-1 over two days in Salem.

IUP got things going quickly against Concord, putting up six runs in the first inning. Allison Viguers (West Chester/West Chester East) delivered the first RBI base hit, bringing in Megan Gould (New Germany/Forest Hills). Amanda Parrish (Dysart/Altoona) followed with an RBI double and Taylor Mercurio (Pittsburgh/Seton-La Salle) made it 3-0 with a single. Two batters later Mackenna Miller (Milton, Pa. /Milton) smacked a double, scoring two more and Lauren Goetz (Cleveland, Oh/Cuyahoga Heights) wrapped up the scoring by bringing Miller home with a single.

In the third, IUP added a run with another RBI single from Mercurio, scoring Viguers from second. The Crimson Hawks wrapped up the scoring with an insurance run in the sixth, with Laura Cotter (Wexford, PA/North Allegheny) bringing Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg Area) around from second with a single.

Mercurio finished 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI, while Viguers, Cotter and Parrish all went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Brooke Darling (Springville, PA/Elk Lake) went the distance to get the win, giving up three earned runs on six hits while striking out six and walking none.

Against Glenville State, IUP plated two in the top of the first with RBI singles from Cotter and Viguers. Cotter picked up another RBI the following inning, bringing Lauren Goetz (Cleveland, Oh/Cuyahoga Heights) across the plate with a double.

Parrish made it 4-0 in the top of the fifth, following Viguers' leadoff single with a two-run home run. It took more of a turn in the sixth, with Gould getting a leadoff single before moving up to second with a Viguers' walk two batters later. Parrish brought Gould around with a single, followed by a Mercurio walk and back-to-back RBI singles from Rachel Francis (Jefferson, OH/Jefferson) and Bryanna Lonick (Burgettstown/Burgettstown). The next two hits each brought two runs in, with Goetz hitting a single and Mercer following with a double to wrap up the scoring.

Gould had three singles in game two. Mercer, Cotter, Viguers, Parrish, Lonick and Goetz each also had multi-hit games, while Parrish drove in three runs.

Lauren Zola (Pittsburgh, PA/Seton-La Salle) started and went five innings, giving up just two hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, IN/Cathedral) tossed the last inning without giving up a hit.

The Crimson Hawks return to Pennsylvania with a doubleheader at Shippensburg scheduled for Saturday.
