Gould’s Walk-off Single Highlights Doubleheader Split with Lock Haven

INDIANA, Pa. – A walk-off single from the bat of junior outfielder Megan Gould gave IUP an exciting seventh inning 2-1 win over Lock Haven as the Crimson Hawks split a Thursday softball doubleheader at Ruth Podbielski Field. IUP dropped game one to the Bald Eagles by a score of 8-6.

Gould had two hits in the game while freshman Lauren Zola gave up one earned run in the complete game victory as the Crimson Hawks finish the day with an 11-7 overall record and a 1-1 mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division.

Zola struck out four batters and scattered four hits to improve to 4-3 on the year. It was her second complete game in seven starts.

The game two pitcher's duel saw IUP score first, plating a run in the fourth inning on a Rachel Francis triple to right center to bring around Lauren Goetz. Lock Haven knotted things up at 1-1 in the top half of the fifth with a sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the seventh, Francis led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Mackenna Miller. Lock Haven pitched around Hannah Mercer as she drew a walk before a wild pitch put both her and Francis in scoring position. Gould stepped to the plate and the lefty slapped a single passed the third baseman and down the left field line as Francis easily scored to give the Crimson Hawks a 2-1 win.

In the opener, the Crimson Hawks took an early 4-0 lead on the strength of a three-run first inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Francis. Miller led off the second inning with a shot over the fence in dead center for her first career home run.

Lock Haven scored three in the third before each team score in the fourth and fifth, with IUP getting RBI base hits from Miller and Amanda Parrish to take a 6-5 lead to the sixth. After a scoreless inning, Lock Haven tallied three in the seventh on five hits to take a two-run lead. IUP led off the bottom half with back-to-back singles by Amy Fairman and Allison Viguers and would end up loading the bases with two outs, but left everyone stranded in the 8-6 loss.

The Crimson Hawks will host another PSAC Central foe in Bloomsburg on Saturday. First pitch at 1 p.m.
