EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – IUP freshman
Jeff Allen (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg Area) struck out eight in 7.2 innings, but a walk-off East Stroudsburg single in the eighth inning of game two gave the 20th-ranked Warriors 3-2 victory and a Sunday doubleheader sweep.
Allen gave up just six hits and three earned runs without walking a single ESU batter, slowing down one of the hottest hitting teams in Division II.
ESU took game one by a score of 14-6. The victories for the Warriors gave them a four-game series sweep of the Crimson Hawks this weekend. IUP fell to 6-10 overall while ESU improved to 14-2.
The Crimson Hawks took an early 2-0 lead in game two, with
Rick Jones (New Castle/Laurel) driving in
Wes Carson (Woodstock, Md./Marriots Ridge) and
Hunter Bigler (Washington/Trinity) in the first inning. Allen held the Warriors scoreless through three, before run-scoring singles in the fourth and fifth tied the game at 2-2.
Allen then set down the side in the sixth and seventh, sending the game to extra innings as the Crimson Hawks managed just one hit over the final three innings. ESU led off the bottom of the eighth with a single, before Allen fanned the next two Warriors' batters. After a stolen base, ESU's Ian Allen hit the walk-off single, driving in the game-winning run from second.
In the game one loss, IUP again took a 2-0 lead in the first on a run-scoring double off the bat of
Dan Sepic (York, Pa./Central York). ESU then picked up two runs in the first, third and fourth innings to take a 6-2 lead. RBIs by Carson and
Ted DeSanti (Erie/Erie Cathedral Prep) in the fifth made it a two-run game until the Warriors exploded for a combined seven runs over the next two innings to go on top 13-4.
The Crimson Hawks managed two more in the seventh on run-scoring singles by DeSanti and
Brian Albert (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum), but left two on base as their late rally fell short.
Bigler and DeSanti both had two hits in the opener, with both DeSanti and Sepic driving in two runs apiece.
The Crimson Hawks begin their conference season this weekend with a four-game set with Gannon. IUP is in Erie on Friday and will host the Golden Knights on Saturday.
