Freshmen Burrows, Martyn Net Hat Tricks in IUP’s Big Win over Gannon

INDIANA, Pa. – Freshmen Ally Burrows (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) and Katie Martyn (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) each netted hat tricks as IUP raced out to a big lead in an 18-5 blowout of Gannon Tuesday afternoon.

The Crimson Hawks started out slowly, but scored seven goals in a four-minute span to lead 7-0 with 21:01 remaining in the first half of IUP's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener.  In that stretch, junior Carissa Smith (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick), senior Brittney Palardy (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall), junior Tara Nicholas (Germantown, Md./Northwest), sophomore Bailey McLeish (Courtice, Ontario/Anderson C.V.I), Burrows and Martyn each scored.

IUP ran the score up to 10-0 on a Smith goal, her second of the day, which briefly put the clock in continuous motion after being up 10 goals. Sophomore attack Sara Harshman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) scored just before the halftime whistle, giving IUP a comfortable 13-2 lead at halftime.

The second half was more of the same, as Burrows scored 22 seconds into the half. IUP scored the first three goals of the half, leading by as many as 14 midway through the half.

Burrows and Martyn completed their hat tricks by scoring their third goals midway in the second half.

The Crimson Hawks dominated the team stats, collecting 21 ground balls and had 15 draw controls. The team also caused 13 turnovers, led by sophomore defender Stevie Holecz (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth ) and Harshman, who each had two.

Goalkeeper Angela Lontoc (Columbus, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) went the distance in net, saving seven shots.

With the win, IUP moves to 3-3 on the season. The team is back in action Saturday at Millersville, with action beginning at 1 p.m.
