MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Junior
Kim Hooven (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) scored a season-high four goals as IUP won its second straight conference women's lacrosse game 15-12 over Millersville on Saturday afternoon.
Three of Hooven's goals came over a 14:35 span between the first and second halves to help the Crimson Hawks extend their lead as they improved to 4-3 on the season and 2-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Millersville falls to 4-3 and 1-2.
Senior
Amy Weinberg (Clarksville, Md./Atholton) scored twice and assisted on five other goals, posting her fourth five-assist game of the year to run her season total to a conference-leading 31.
The Crimson Hawks grabbed a 9-5 lead at halftime, with Weinberg finding Hooven twice in the last seven minutes to extend the lead to four. Millersville was on a 3-1 run heading into those final seven minutes, cutting the Crimson Hawks lead to 7-5.
IUP had to fend off a late second half comeback from Millersville, as the Marauders scored four goals in the last 10:51. The Crimson Hawks countered those with two of their own from
Katie Martyn (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and
Brenna Gallagher (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) as they held onto the three-goal win.
The Crimson Hawks forced Millersville into 23 turnovers, with
Carissa Smith (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) forcing three and Weinberg and Gallagher each coming up with two. Gallagher also helped IUP hold a 15-14 edge in draw controls with six on the day.
Smith, Martyn and
Ally Burrows (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) each scored two goals and
Tara Nicholas (Germantown, Md./Northwest) dished out two assists.
The Crimson Hawks go for three straight next Saturday at home against Shippensburg.
