MELBOURNE, Fla. – Freshmen
Adriana Greco (Sound Beach, N.Y./Rocky Point) and
Ally Burrows (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) each tallied four goals in their collegiate debuts, but IUP dropped its 2016 season opener by a score of 15-11 at Florida Tech on Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Amy Weinberg (Clarksville, Md./Atholton) dished out five assists, while picking up four ground balls, four draw controls and caused three turnovers in the loss. Florida Tech improved to 3-0 on the season.
The Crimson Hawks led 5-3 after eight minutes, but Florida Tech outscored IUP 4-1 to take a one-goal lead into halftime. IUP tied the score at 7-7 with a goal by
Kim Hooven (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) just over a minute into the second half, but the Panthers scored seven of the next eight goals to take a 14-8 lead with five minutes left to play.
Greco then went on an individual scoring binge, netting three goals over a 1:15 span, to narrow the gap to three at 14-11 with just over three minutes to play. IUP couldn't get on the board the rest of the way, as Florida Tech added an insurance goal to come away with the 15-11 win.
The Crimson Hawks continue their four-game Florida trip with a game at Saint Leo on Monday at 7 p.m.
