PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Freshman
Jeff Allen (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg Area) and sophomore
Dan Sepic (York, Pa./Central York) combined to pitch a five-hit shutout as IUP defeated Pikeville, 2-0, in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon.
Allen, who started the Crimson Hawks' 2016 opener by striking out 10 over five innings, won his second game of the season by striking out six and scattering three hits over 5.2 innings. Sepic came on in relief to get the final 10 outs, while striking out two and giving up two hits.
Redshirt sophomore first baseman
Anthony Rigous (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) got IUP on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning by belting a 2-1 pitch over the left-field fence for his first homerun of the season. Rigous finished the day going 2-for-4.
IUP tacked on an insurance run in the seventh after junior second baseman
Matt Eperesi (Cranberry Twp./Mars) was hit by a pitch and then replaced on the base paths by pinch runner
Cory Wheeler (Butler, Pa./Butler). Wheeler advanced to second on a groudout then scored on a Rigous single up the middle.
The Crimson Hawks dropped the first game of the doubleheader in extra innings, 6-5. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but postponed due to rain.
Down 2-1 in the fifth, senior
Hunter Bigler (Washington/Trinity) and junior
Chris Calliari (Brockway/Brockway) scored on bases-loaded walks to kickstart a three-run inning for the Crimson Hawks. Bigler scored again in the inning when senior third baseman
Rick Jones (New Castle/Laurel) reached on a fielder's choice.
The Crimson Hawks added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when sophomore
