INDIANA, Pa. – IUP field hockey picked up its second win in as many days, this one a 2-0 shutout of visiting Bellarmine in a non-conference match on Sunday afternoon at a rainy George P. Miller Stadium.
The victory was the second in a row for the Crimson Hawks, who improved to 3-2 overall on the season.
Sarah Zielinski (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) and
Selena West (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) scored the goals for IUP, which outshot Bellarmine 8-4 on the afternoon. The Knights fell to 3-3.
Zielinski notched her first goal of the season in the 23rd minute, getting the assist from Matt Reightler. West's goal, her third of the season, was a deflection in the 41st minute from
Madelyn Mullen (Chester Springs, Pa./Owen J. Roberts).
Goalie
Alyssa Lerda (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) picked up her first shutout of the year, getting big help from the IUP defense as the Crimson Hawks allowed just one Bellarmine shot in the second half. Lerda has given up just one goal in her last 140 minutes in the cage and lowered her goals against average to 0.79.
The Crimson Hawks begin a three-game road swing on Tuesday, heading to Mansfield to face the Mountaineers. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
