No. 9 IUP Football Dominates Edinboro in PSAC West Opener

EDINBORO, Pa. – Ninth-ranked IUP totaled 585 yards, forced two turnovers, and scored on special teams in a dominant 56-28 win at Edinboro in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West divisional opener on Saturday afternoon.

It was the second straight all-around performance for the Crimson Hawks, who improved to a 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the division with their commanding win. Edinboro, which came into the matchup unbeaten, falls to 3-1 and 0-1.

The Crimson Hawks ran for 335 yards and six touchdowns on 63 team carries, controlling the clock with a 35:36 time of possession. Freshman Samir Bullock (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) was the leading ground gainer, ripping off a season-high 153 yards and two touchdowns on 18 rushes. His big run was a 57-yarder on a zone read play, breaking tackles and busting it to the outside for a touchdown early in the second quarter.

Bullock's touchdown, his first of the game, gave IUP a 28-0 lead at the 10:38 mark of the quarter.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Lenny Williams, Jr. (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox) scored the first touchdown of the game, a one yard run with just under 10 minutes on the clock in the first. A little over one minute later, redshirt sophomore Diamond Jones (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne) blocked an Edinboro punt, which was scooped up at the 12-yard line and run into the end zone by Chris Wuestner (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) to make it a 14-0 game.

Williams capped a 10-play, 99-yard drive with a four-yard rushing score at the start of the second to make it a 21-0 game. That was followed by Bullock's touchdown, before redshirt junior Drew Harris (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) ended the half with a one-yard plunge with seven seconds to go to give IUP a 35-0 lead at the break.

Williams finished the game going an efficient 12-of-14 with 207 yards through the air, adding 12 carries for 69 yards and two rushing touchdowns.

Bullock started the second half scoring with a seven-yard run on IUP's first drive of the third quarter, making it a 42-0 ball game.

Edinboro finally got on the board with 3:37 to play in the third, putting together its first of two back-to-back 80-yard touchdown drives. The Crimson Hawks answered with two straight scoring drives of their own, resulting in a 43-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Mike Pietropola (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) to junior receiver Walt Pegues (Philadelphia, Pa. /Central) and another one-yard touchdown run by Harris.

Pegues had seven catches for 169 yards and that touchdown. Redshirt freshman JoJo Gause (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) caught four for 59 yards.

Harris' touchdown was preceded by a diving interception by redshirt freshman JR Stevens (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) at the Edinboro 15-yard line. The pick one was one of two in the second half for IUP, with junior Eric Doe (Darby, Pa. /Academy Prep) ending another Fighting Scots drive with one at the Crimson Hawks 15-yard line.

Redshirt junior corner Jay Watkins (Chester, Pa. /Hyde School) had team-high eight tackles, consistently stepping up to make stops in the run game and limiting the Fighting Scots to 85 yards on 25 carries.

Senior linebacker Myles Catlin (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Obama), junior safety Takhi Turner (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Twp.), and Jones each had four tackles. The blocked punt for Jones was his third in 15 career games. Redshirt junior lineman Jordan Diven (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny) had the Crimson Hawks' lone sack.

The Fighting Scots entered the matchup averaging 43.0 points and 426 yards of offense, including a 54-point output against West Chester last week. The IUP defense limited Edinboro to 366 yards, with the 28 points not coming until the last 18 minutes of the game.

After three straight games on the road to open their season, the Crimson Hawks will host Seton Hill (3-1, 0-1) in their home opener next Saturday, October 1 at 4 p.m.
