WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Juniors
Natalie Cignetti (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) and
Alexis Anderson (Cleveland, Ohio/Mayfield) combined for 37 of the team's 52 kills to lead IUP women's volleyball to a thrilling five set win at West Chester on Friday night.
The win was the third in a row for the Crimson Hawks, who improved to 12-2 overall and 3-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
The back-and-forth match started with a 25-20 win by West Chester, followed by a pair of 25-15 victories by the Crimson Hawks as they took a 2-1 lead. The Golden Rams tied the match with a 25-8 win in the fourth set, but IUP outlasted West Chester in the fifth with a 19-17 win.
Cignetti finished with a career-high 21 kills on 68 total attacks, adding 13 digs and two service aces. Anderson had 16 kills on 56 attacks, with 14 digs, three block assists and a solo block.
Cignetti was consistent throughout, tallying four kills in each of the first four sets while putting up five in the fifth, including the game-winner from senior setter
Lindsay Moeller (Troy, Mich./Troy). Moeller posted her third 40-assist match of the season, finishing the night with 45 assists and 14 digs.
The fifth set included 13 ties and 14 lead changes, with IUP pulling away from a 17-17 tie with kills from Moeller and Cignetti for its 12th win of the year.
Five different players had double-figure dig nights for the Crimson Hawks. In addition to Cignetti, Anderson and Moeller, sophomore
Breanna Damiani (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) had 10 digs while classmate
Jess Marut (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) finished with a team-high 18 digs.
It was the first of what IUP hopes to be two victories this weekend, as the Crimson Hawks will take on Cheyney (1-8, 0-3) on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
