INDIANA, Pa. – A three-pointer from junior
Anthony Glover (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) with seven seconds to play in regulation gave the No. 12 IUP men's basketball team an 80-77 come-from-behind victory over Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Saturday night at the Kovalchick Complex.
With the win the Crimson Hawks extend their winning streak to six games and improve to 15-2 overall and 10-1 in league play. The 13-point comeback win also ranks as the second largest come-from-behind victory in Kovalchick Complex history (Nov. 29, 2014 vs. The Sciences/15-point comeback). Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots fall to 4-11 overall behind a 2-9 mark in PSAC play.
Glover finished with 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and one block. Sophomore
Dante Lombardi (Indiana, Pa./The Kiski School) scored a career-high 22 points on a 6-of-14 from beyond the arc. The six three-pointers also set a career-high. Lombardi also added nine assists and five rebounds. His nine assists tied his career-high. Junior
Ayron Hutton (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) added nine points in the win.
IUP started the game on an 8-0 run, highlighted by three-pointer from
Ayron Hutton (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) and
Anthony Glover (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit). Hutton then put the Crimson Hawks on top 13-2 with another three-pointer at the 16:30-mark. Edinboro then responded with a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 15-11 as the Fighting Scots held the Crimson Hawks to just 1-of-7 from the field during the run. Edinboro took its first lead of the game, 20-19, at the 7:06-mark on a three-pointer from Sheldon Brogdon. The Fighting Scots then pushed the lead to 29-19 with a 9-0 run to take a 29-19 lead on a layup from Jayon Mason. Edinboro extended the lead to as many as 13 after a layup from Jon Girvin at the 3:26-mark.
The Crimson Hawks started the second half on a 7-2 run that cut the Edinboro lead to 43-39 at the 18:25-mark after redshirt senior
Devon Cottrell (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Gateway) converted a three-point play. The Fighting Scots answered with an 11-5 run over a nearly four-minute stretch to push the lead to 54-43 with 14:54 to play. A layup from sophomore
Jacobo Diaz (Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain/CBA Gran Canaria) cut the lead to six (54-48) at the 13:25-mark. Edinboro then countered with a 10-5 run, that extended the lead to 64-51 on a three-pointer from Mikael Anderson midway through the half.
A three-pointer from Glover capped a 13-5 Crimson Hawks run that pulled IUP to within five at 69-64 with 6:42 to play. From there IUP used three-pointers from Glover,
Brandon Spain (Baltimore, Md./Glen Burnie) and sophomore
Dante Lombardi (Indiana, Pa./The Kiski School) to regain the lead at 70-69 with 5:10 to play. Both teams traded baskets over the next few minutes before a Glover jumper gave IUP a 74-73 lead with just 2:06 to play in regulation. Brogdon then converted a layup to tie the game at 77-77, setting up Glover's game-winning three-pointer.
Edinboro was led a game-high 29 points from Mikael Anderson. Brogdon added 19 points while Andre Frederick totaled 12 points.
IUP shot at a 43.1 percent (31-of-72) clip overall and nearly 50.0 percent (18-of-37) in the second half. Edinboro 50.8 percent (31-of-61) for the game while out-rebounding the Crimson Hawks by a 37-33 edge.
